Who They Are

STUDENTS TEACHING STUDENTS

Unique to Summerbridge and key to its success is the “students teaching students” model, which has older students, ages 16 to 22, teach and administer programs to underprivileged younger students, ages 13 to 15. This model creates a dynamic learning environment where young people are both the initiators and beneficiaries of the educational process. Students are placed in an English immersion environment, with small class sizes and low student-teacher ratios to ensure diverse learning needs are met. Classes at Summerbridge are highly engaging, with English Language Development strategies being used in conjunction with hands-on learning to encourage student interaction, build self-confidence, and spark creativity.

Why? The impact of positive relationships is invaluable for our youth. The Summerbridge opportunity comes at a critical stage for our students, as they embark on a variety of decisions that affect their lives. Students begin to think about different academic electives during the upper years of secondary school and consider the range of possible careers ahead of them. The “students teaching students” model provides inspiration and encouragement for students as they make these choices. Because student teachers at Summerbridge are close in age to the students, they are able to understand and connect with students as both mentors and friends. These relationships help students discover their internal strengths and take ownership of their educational journeys.

(English) “Students feel special at Summerbridge. We learn that we have a voice and are listened to here. No one has the same fingerprints and appearance as you and me. We respect each other and there is so much love at Summerbridge. To respect ourselves and to respect others is also education and we want to share that with everyone we meet. My dream is to travel the world!"

(English) “Before Summerbridge, I used to be very shy, but I am much more confident now because we learn how to cooperate with each other. I loved meeting the Summerbridge teachers from different countries and different parts of Hong Kong. After seeing how amazing they are, my dream is to become a Summerbridge teacher in the future.”

(English) “Summerbridge taught me how to be positive. When we do cheers or give speeches in front of everyone, all of the teachers and students are very encouraging. The biggest impact on me is that I am not afraid to speak in public anymore. My dream is to be an engineer to make people’s lives better.”
