Unique to Summerbridge and key to its success is the “students teaching students” model, which has older students, ages 16 to 22, teach and administer programs to underprivileged younger students, ages 13 to 15. This model creates a dynamic learning environment where young people are both the initiators and beneficiaries of the educational process. Students are placed in an English immersion environment, with small class sizes and low student-teacher ratios to ensure diverse learning needs are met. Classes at Summerbridge are highly engaging, with English Language Development strategies being used in conjunction with hands-on learning to encourage student interaction, build self-confidence, and spark creativity.
Why? The impact of positive relationships is invaluable for our youth. The Summerbridge opportunity comes at a critical stage for our students, as they embark on a variety of decisions that affect their lives. Students begin to think about different academic electives during the upper years of secondary school and consider the range of possible careers ahead of them. The “students teaching students” model provides inspiration and encouragement for students as they make these choices. Because student teachers at Summerbridge are close in age to the students, they are able to understand and connect with students as both mentors and friends. These relationships help students discover their internal strengths and take ownership of their educational journeys.
